The South West Surrey Lib Dems will field the following candidates in the Waverley Borough Council elections on 5th May for Farnham:

Anne Mansell

Anne Mansell

(Borough and Farnham Town Council Candidate for The Bourne)

Anne Mansell has lived in Farnham since 1975. A former primary school teacher, she is a governor at All Saints School, Tilford, and Trustee of the Gostrey Centre, ASSIST, and Age UK Waverley. She has volunteered at Oxfam in the Woolmead for 19 years.

Closely involved with Winterwatch, the temporary hostel for the homeless, Anne was a founding member of First Base, raising funds to build Simmonds Court in Victoria Road to provide more permanent accommodation.


A keen gardener, she grows her own vegetables and fruit. Widowed in 2009, she has four children, six grandchildren and two lively border collies.

Chris Hyland

Chris Hyland

(Borough and Farnham Town Council Candidate for Farnham Castle)

Chris Hyland moved to Farnham 9 years ago with his wife and two young sons. He combines being the 'stay at home' dad with part time work as a chartered accountant, currently working as finance manager for a national charity.


Chris is the Chair of Governors at St Andrew's Infant School and Treasurer of both the Third Farnham Scout Group and the Lazy Bishops Music Festival. He is an active member of the local branch of CAMRA.

As a cyclist, Chris would like to see fewer cars and lorries and more people cycling in the town centre.

James Firth

James Firth

(Borough and Farnham Town Council Candidate for Firgrove)

James Firth moved to Farnham 14 years ago and has spent the last decade in Firgrove. He works as an IT consultant, and has been involved with projects ranging from Motorola's secure systems used by the police to a school league tables viewer he developed for the Daily Telegraph.

He and his wife Emma are expecting their first child this summer, and he is involved in local politics and in campaigns for digital rights.

Sylvia Jacobs

Sylvia Jacobs

(Borough and Farnham Town Council Candidate for Firgrove)

Sylvia Jacobs has a degree in Economics and Statistics from the University of York. She has lived in Farnham for the past 33 years while working as a government statistician in London. She is now retired.

Sylvia's 3 children have grown up in Farnham, and she strongly believes in finding time to help in the local area. She was a Waverley councillor and has been a primary school governor for 13 years.

She regularly plays the piano for schools and church services. She also enjoys theatre and cinema, and is keen to support the improvement of leisure facilities across Waverley.

Becky Seale

Becky Seale

(Borough and Farnham Town Council Candidate for Moor Park)

Becky Seale went to School in Farnham, before going on to Manchester University, where she obtained a 1st Class degree in English and French.

She now works an Associate Director in a large research company based in London, specialising in social market research. Her hobbies include running, cycling, and rock climbing.

If elected, she will bring a youthful, energetic perspective to Waverley Borough Council, using her experience in market research to listen to the needs of local people and to represent them to the Council.

Nicki Deeson

Nicki Deeson

(Borough and Farnham Town Council Candidate for Wrecclesham and Rowledge)

Nicki Deeson has lived in Farnham with her husband and two sons for 9 years.
After working as an overseas volunteer for two years in Bangladesh and in Africa, Nicki has spent the majority of her career working in a variety of roles for overseas development charities. She is now the Head of Finance at the Alzheimer's Society in London.


Nicki loves living in Farnham and taking advantage of the local area: swimming at Frensham Ponds and walking and cycling extensively in the surrounding area. She is also a member of a local book group.

Derek Seale

Derek Seale

(Borough and Farnham Town Council Candidate for Upper Hale)

Derek Seale has lived in Farnham for 34 years. He is Married to Theresa, and they have three adult children. He is self-employed as Managing Director of a local company.

Derek was a Waverly Borough Councillor for 5 years in the 1990s, and served as Leader of the Council for a year. He was chairman of The Farnham Society for 3 years, and serves as Governor at Weydon School.

If elected, Derek will use his experience in running a business and past service at Waverley to work for the needs of local people, getting things done rather than just talking.

Mark Norris

Mark Norris

(Borough and Farnham Town Council Candidate for Badshot Lea)

Mark Norris came to Badshot Lea in 1979, moving to Weybourne in 2008.
He represented the two villages on Waverley between 1999-2003, and on Farnham Town Council between 1999-2007.

Mark campaigned against the two big developments in Monkton Lane, and continues to oppose any development that affects the 'strategic gap' between Farnham and Aldershot.


Having trained as a solicitor, Mark now works on policing and community safety policy issues at national level, and helps his wife run a consultancy advising people with personal injuries how to find employment. They are glad to be raising their young children in the area.

Chris Hunter Chris Hunter

(Borough candidate for Weybourne & Badshot Lea)

Chris Hunter has lived in East Farnham for 10 years with his family, having attended Farnham 6th Form College back in the early 1980s, He has had close connections with the town since then.

Chris currently works for a firm of solicitors in Guildford and is involved with many local organisations and societies. As a local resident, he has serious concerns about the level of unsustainable development in East Farnham, Weybourne and Badshot Lea.

If elected, Chris will work hard on your behalf to stand up for local residents who don't want their quality of life eroded.

David Attfield David Attfield

(Farnham Town Council Candidate)

David Attfield is one of the few local people who can boast of attending the old Badshot Lea Secondary School. He and his wife are life-long residents of the village.


He has, for many years, compiled a monthly magazine for a group of local churches. He regularly assists the local Girls Brigade Company, and is variously their treasurer, cook, and driver.


David was Farnham Mayor in 2006/7, and has been a town councillor since 2003. When not campaigning to protect green spaces, he can be found with his horses or dogs, or with his camera taking pictures of local wildlife.
