Liberal Democrats in Waverley are delighted to note that, under Lib Dem administration, for the year 2006/7 Waverley was named as the top council area for reducing the amount of waste produced, with an 11% per head reduction.
"This wonderful result is thanks to the people of Waverley, who are now among the best in the country at reducing and recycling their waste," said LibDem Councillor Celia Savage. "There were some teething problems and it was not always easy, but our residents clearly rose to the challenge with the new re-cycling measures put in place by the Liberal Democrats."
Under the LibDems, Waverley also came 8th best nationally for the collection of "dry recyclables" (i.e. excluding green garden waste).
Cllr John Savage commented, "It's a strange irony that Waste Management seemed to be unpopular with electors in the local elections last May, when the LibDems lost to the Conservatives in Waverley."
"We hope that the Conservative administration at Waverley will build upon this achievement with even more recycling and more ways of dealing with waste," said Cllr Ken Reed. "In particular I believe that they need urgently to tackle the problems associated with food waste within the next year."
