Climate change is even higher up the agenda in Waverley following the appointment of a new sustainability co-ordinator at Lib Dem run Waverley Borough Council, and proposals for a special interest group on climate change to be established.
The new co-ordinator will be implementing the borough's Climate Change Action Plan, featuring actions on, among others, housing, sustainable community planning, household waste management and will look at ways of helping individuals to reduce their carbon emissions.
"Tackling climate change is a massive task but Waverley is serious about making sure that individuals are able to do their bit for the environment and that the systems and policies are in place locally to minimise our collective impact on the climate," comments Lib Dem Cllr Victor Scrivens, Waverley's portfolio holder for the environment. He continues: "At our Executive meeting on 6 February we agreed to broaden the role of our special interest group on waste to focus more on climate change as a whole."
Fotini Kallipoliti, who joined Waverley in January, is the new sustainability co-ordintator. She explains: "Whether we like it or not climate change is happening. There has already been plenty of good work done in Waverley to protect the environment and over the coming months Waverley will be setting its priorities for the next round of action we need to take to reduce our carbon emissions."
Waverley signed up to the Nottingham Declaration on Climate Change in July of last year. The declaration highlights the crucial role that local authorities have to play in reducing emissions and adapting to the changing climate.
Fotini continues: "Recently we've been showing residents some of the ways that climate change can be tackled. The Green Energy Machine, a mobile display of environmental information, visited Farnham and Cranleigh recently. It had a demonstration of green energy technologies and information about reducing carbon emissions." Fotini concludes: "More initiatives like this is one way forward but I'll also be talking to other agencies, such as transport providers, the county council and so on to plan and implement bigger programmes."
