Lib Dems Announce Huge Reduction of Fly-tipping

The illegal dumping of waste and rubbish in the borough has gone down from 306 incidents in the period between April and September 2005 to 240 incidents in the same period this year, according to a report from Waverley Borough Council.

"This is excellent progress but, of course, there is still a need to get tough on the main culprits, which are generally rogue businesses that dump their waste illegally," commented Councillor Victor Scrivens, portfolio holder for the environment.

Cllr Scrivens added: "Businesses which avoid paying for the safe disposal of their business waste by recklessly dumping it, simply push the cost on to tax-paying residents and legitimate businesses which have to foot the bill to have their rubbish disposed of properly."

The report shows that tackling incidents of fly-tipping quickly prevents new dumping sites growing. "Fly-tipping attracts more fly-tipping. By removing new sites quickly, other fly tippers are discouraged from dumping in the same place," explained Cllr Scrivens.
