Lib Dems tackling Affordable Housing delivery in Waverley

A picture of some housesTo sustain the social fabric of Farnham, a key part of the proposed East Street regeneration is the provision of affordable homes.

Lib Dem Councillor Ken Reed, portfolio holder for housing says "At this time of the year, and recognising that we are some 40 years on from the groundbreaking TV drama Cathy Come Home, it is tragic that there are still insufficient affordable homes for those in need."

In a report to Waverley's Executive Committee, councillors heard how over the last three years, effective working with housing associations has led to the provision of 68 homes in Farnham, 51 for rent and 17 for shared ownership.

Councillor Reed adds: ''I know from our recent housing scheme at Cranleigh, where we provided 79 new homes, that affordable housing is making a real difference to people's lives and a positive contribution to our communities.

"Over the coming years, the regeneration of East Street represents the opportunity to add to the borough's provision of affordable homes in Farnham with Thames Valley Housing Association providing 88 new one and two bedroom homes of which 46 homes will be for rent and 42 for shared ownership. Waverley's towns are very expensive places to live with average house prices at over £320,000. This makes it very difficult for first time buyers and households to either buy or rent a home."

Chris Mansell, portfolio holder for East Street added: "Farnham's Health Check rated affordable housing as the fourth most important issue for the town. The East Street scheme represents a real chance to redress the balance in Farnham with more affordable homes in the town centre, using the infrastructure that's already in place and demonstrating our commitment to the climate change agenda. We are all looking forward to seeing how Crest Nicholson meets these needs with innovative and creative design.

"Waverley envisages that East Street will provide a contemporary townscape with opportunities for younger people to live, work and enjoy what Farnham can offer rather than having to go further afield.''
