South West Surrey Liberal Democrats have selected Surrey County Councillor Sarah Di Caprio as their next Prospective Parliamentary Candidate.
At a packed meeting on Friday 23rd June, Sarah was chosen to compete against Conservative Jeremy Hunt at the next general election. A Surrey County Councillor in Guildford, Sarah is one of five Lib Dem councillors who achieved a shock result at the county elections in 2005 by taking all the Guildford town seats for the first time.
Sarah, who is Lib Dem Environment Spokesperson at Surrey County Council, said she was delighted to have been selected and especially so to begin her role by attending the Farnham Street Carnival. "It was a fantastic way to get to meet people from the town - I spent the morning out on the doorsteps with our hard-working Farnham Town and Waverley Borough councillors talking with residents and then meeting more in the sunshine in Castle Street."
Sarah has already been immersed in local issues through her work as a county councillor. "I know minerals is a key issue both around Farnham and just over the border in Guildford, as well as the whole environmental aspect of recycling and landfill. I'm very pleased to hear that Waverley Borough Council is among the top 50% of councils nationally performing well on recycling."
Sarah said there were other significant issues affecting people in the constituency, such as health with the closure of Milford Hospital and the threat to services at the Royal Surrey in nearby Guildford. "The impact these closures and threats of closures would have on local people is immense and it needs constant pressure put on the local authorities and government. I will be pushing for action at the highest level."
Commenting on her election prospects Sarah said South West Surrey was a marginal seat and wanted to remind people that the last three general elections had been close. "We're taking this very seriously - we have a lot of natural support in the area and we're setting out to win the seat," she said. "Labour is disintegrating and the Conservatives are not as strong as people make out - just look at the fantastic result for the Lib Dems at Bromley.
"What is more, the Lib Dems have a record of delivery in South West Surrey. We run the local Borough Council and both Farnham and Godalming town councils. We have delivered and our immediate priority is to put in a strong performance at the local elections next May. I'm confident we can make that breakthrough. I'm looking forward to working with the people of South West Surrey, listening to what they want from their parliamentary representative and hopefully earning their support."
