Young people living at The Chantrys, Farnham will soon benefit from a new multi-use games area after members of Waverley's Executive committee agreed to allocate a grant of £10,000 towards the project.
To improve leisure and recreational facilities in the area, residents originally indicated a need for a communal garden area, for which Waverley allocated a grant of £10,000. As plans for the garden project were developed and further consultation was carried out with residents, it was established that there was actually a greater need for facilities for young people.
Speaking about the project John Robini, the Lib Dem Portfolio holder for young people: "Waverley is committed to improving the quality of life of its residents. Working in partnership with the people who live at The Chantrys, Surrey Police, Surrey County Council and Pavilion Housing Association has enabled an idea, that was originally expressed at a community meeting, to be developed into a plan that will ultimately fulfil the needs of young people who live in the area."
It is estimated that the project will cost approximately £48,000 with Waverley Borough Council providing nearly 50 per cent of the money required. Additional money has also been pledged or allocated by Surrey County Council, Surrey Police, Farnham Charity Institute, Farnham Town Council, McNicholas and South West Trains.
It is anticipated that work on the multi-use games area will start in the spring/summer of this year. The finished games area will provide facilities for young people to play football and basketball but will be suitable for other ball games.
