Waverley Borough Council has received a consultation draft of the Surrey Waste Plan. This Plan has been produced by Surrey County Council and details the proposals and policies for sustainable management of all Surrey's waste.
In its response to Surrey, Waverley will suggest that waste reduction is given a greater emphasis and that the Plan should also indicate the general way in which waste disposal is to be planned for. The aim of this request is to minimise adverse environmental impact whilst maximising the beneficial outputs that can come from waste.
Lib Dem Councillor Victor Scrivens, Waverley's portfolio holder for the environment says: "This plan will affect residents in Waverley directly in terms of how their waste is disposed of. Although it is a very useful outline of the future of waste management, all of us need to look at what we can do to reduce the levels of waste produced. It is no longer a sustainable option to keep dumping our waste in holes in the ground. Much of what is disposed of could actually be a valuable resource and we should be looking at ways in which we can reuse, recycle and even generate energy using methods such as biogas energy production."
