GRAND DESIGNS IN WAVERLEY
More than 130 people turned up at a special awards ceremony to see winners of the 2005 Waverley Design Awards receive their prizes. More than 30 prizes were presented in recognition of outstanding design in categories such as Alterations and Conversions, Environmental Enhancement and the Quality Contractor.
Speaking after the presentations, Lib Dem Councillor Patrick Haveron, portfolio holder for planning and major projects said: "It was fantastic to see so many people turn out on a cold November night to support the winners of the Waverley Design Awards. We have seen some amazing examples of design and I wish to congratulate the winners and thank everybody who took part. I have been particularly impressed by the number of schools that have taken part and the enthusiasm of students. The future of the borough is in the hands of these young people, so it is reassuring to see how much they care about the area in which they live and go to school."
"Density and town cramming are local concerns, yet I was pleased to see some excellent examples of use of space in the design of town centre new builds. An example of where a concrete garage had been transformed into two one bedroomed semi detached cottages in Godalming's Conservation Area was both unobtrusive and skilful."
"We also have a Sustainable Design Category, which contributes to our Green Thread Policies including sustainable construction, energy saving features and environmental enhancement."
Waverley is currently seeking nominations for the 2007 Waverley Design Awards. Anyone can nominate a scheme as long as it is relevant to the Design Awards and is located within the borough.
