Sparks fly in Surrey Advertiser
Most people in SW Surrey will have received election material from the Conservatives and Labour, yet we are surprised how lacking in facts they appear. In an expensive personalised mailshot from the Conservative candidate, he makes two false statements:
"the terrible problems of the Liberal Democrat Waverley administration" and that "Liberal Democrat policies also include abolishing church schools"
Firstly Waverley has been very prudently run by the Lib Dems, setting a sensible council tax, better use of car park income and cost cutting red tape to the tune of £300,000. Indeed the Conservative opposition effectively supported the recent Budget by confirming they would have set Council Tax at about the same level.
The Surrey Advertiser quoted Simon talking about the Church Schools issue: "What I promised to do was state the facts, that is what I have done and that is what is upsetting them. We have printed the words that Jeremy Hunt used. They are his words, not mine." "He wrote to heads of church schools admitting that he knew they were not under threat and then released a leaflet to the public saying that they were. "He has said one thing in public and one thing in private. This shows the duplicity and goes to the heart of the calibre of representation."
We won't be too critical of the Labour Rose leaflet, as we'd be here too long putting the facts, but would just mention that they have managed to pick up that local people are worried about East Street (Farnham) and Key Site (Godalming), but their grasp of the salient facts is obviously small. Given that Labour have no local councillors, we couldn't argue that regarding East Street "Labours hands are clean of blame for what many consider to be a poor planning process". Maybe they are referring to John Prescott's housing densities and the ODPM?
