Waverley Borough Council has failed to meet the deadline for the first requests it received under the Freedom of Information Act. Simon Cordon submitted the requests for all contracts and legal agreements between Waverley and developers of the Key Site in Godalming and the East Street regeneration in Farnham.
The Act came into force on January 1st this year. Under the new law Waverley is required to provide information within 20 working days from a request.
The deadline for providing the information to Simon was by 12 midnight on Monday (January 31st), twenty working days from Simon's request.
At 4:30pm on Monday Waverley sent an email to Simon explaining that the information was not yet available. The email claimed that Waverley was "awaiting replies from third parties" and promised that the documents would be dispatched "in the next few days".
Simon commented: "This doesn't bode well. I expect Waverley may have just covered itself within the Act by sending the email to me but it doesn't change the fact that they have failed to meet the request in the statutory time. Even if there is some hitch with one or other of the developers Waverley should have provided me with anything it has itself, even if this were only some of the documents. These are early days for the freedom of information act, so I'm happy to give Waverley a day or two longer, but I expect to receive something by the end of the week".
