Simon Cordon and Derek Seale are concerned that Farnham's 'General' Post Office is to be included in a review that may see as many as half of all crown post offices close
Simon Cordon is continuing his campaign to secure the long-term future of Farnham's directly-managed 'crown' post office. Today, Simon handed out petitions in various places in Farnham town centre, including in front of the post office in West Street. Simon was helped by a number of volunteers, including local LibDem campaigner Derek Seale.
The post office, known locally as the 'General', is to be included in a review of crown post offices. The review may see as many as half of all crown post offices close. The Royal Mail have stated that the post office will not close next year, but are refusing to rule out that it may close as a result of the review in 2006/07.
Simon recently stressed the importance of post offices to the community, "The Liberal Democrats accept that post offices must be run efficiently. Where both the previous and the current Government are wrong is in taking the view that the post office should be run exactly like a business with profit being the driving force. Post offices are an important part of the fabric of our community and their value goes much further than simply a profit and loss account".
