Simon at Peperham House with Mr & Mrs Carroll
A planned visit from Liberal Democrat prospective parliamentary candidate Simon Cordon to meet residents of Peperham House in Haslemere became a celebration over the success of Simon's campaign to save local buses, particularly the 70 and 71 used regularly by the Peperham House residents.
Simon's visit, Thursday December 9th, had been planned as an update on the "Save Our Buses" campaign. A week earlier Surrey had given in, and agreed to provide the necessary financial support to save the routes.
Residents at Peperham House had signed Simon's petition, written letters and collected signatures from other bus users.
Concern was still raised about the confusion from Surrey County Council over whether a review would take place about the future of the buses next September.
Simon had tabled a formal question to Surrey's Executive Committee asking for a clear assurance that there was no September 2005 deadline on the new subsidy for bus routes 19, 46, 70 and 71. "I asked my question on December 7th, just in time to be able to update residents during my visit. Surrey has now agreed that the subsidy is permanent. Residents were delighted when I confirmed this".
Simon listened to a number of concerns about other issues in the Town, mainly pedestrian safety and speeding traffic. "A number of good points were made and I will take these up with the relevant authorities", he said.
