Simon inspects a new load of glass that has just arrived for processing
As part of his tour of recycling and waste disposal sites used by Waverley, Simon Cordon, the Liberal Democrat Parliamentary Spokesman for SW Surrey, spent a day at British Glass Recycling in Harlow.
Simon, who is a keen supporter of recycling, has now visited the Albury Landfill site, Aylesford Newsprint in Kent and, last week, British Glass Recycling.
"It was good to see tonnes of glass from our area being reprocessed", said Simon.
Simon was instrumental in making an increase in recycling a key pledge in the Liberal Democrat manifesto before the local elections in May 2003. Since then Waverley's recycling level has increased from around 10% of all local waste to 25%. "This is a fantastic achievement in just a little over a year", said Simon.
"I am determined to see further improvements. The old Tory record, before last May, of landfill first and recycling as an afterthought had to stop, and now it is", said Simon.
Simon is pressing Waverley hard to introduce plastics recycling. "Plastics are difficult because they are bulky but light. Under Government rules this makes plastics potentially expensive to recycle. However I am hopeful that Waverley can find a way of introducing some plastics recycling very soon", added Simon.
