Guildford and Waverley Primary Care Trust's (PCT) top manager has given a commitment that expanding services at Milford Hospital is amongst the options for the hospital's future.
Simon Cordon, the Liberal Democrat Parliamentary Spokesman for SW Surrey, formally asked for the assurance at a meeting of the PCT Board held in the Baptist Church Hall, Godalming.
Simon, who fought to save the hospital from closure three years ago, has recently put forward plans to expand services making Milford a centre of excellence for elderly care. Simon's plan came as a response to a decision by the PCT to review the hospital's future as part of a £22.5m budget crisis.
At the PCT Board Meeting, Liz Slinn, Chief Executive, promised that the option of expanding services would be given full consideration.
"Simon's Plan" - as it has become known - would not only provide excellence in care but also help the budget crisis. Across the whole elderly care sector money would be better used by a concentration of rehabilitation services at Milford.
"The excellence in care I envisage would result in less re-admission and less unnecessary post-rehab care. These are just two ways in which money would be better used whilst also providing an improved service", said Simon.
"I'm pleased that my option is on the table", added Simon. "However there's still a long way to go before we secure the hospital's future once and for all. There will still be some NHS managers who think closing Milford is an easy way of saving money. They're wrong, and we must keep providing the evidence and facts to show they are wrong. The campaign has started but it's far from over".
