As part of his 'New Future for Milford Hospital' plan, Simon Cordon, the Liberal Democrat Parliamentary Spokesman for SW Surrey, is enlisting the support of over 3,000 people who signed a petition in 2001.
Three years ago Simon led a successful campaign to save the hospital from closure. As part of the campaign he raised a petition with 3,160 signatures.
Now, with the local Primary Care Trust (PCT) facing a £22.5 million budget shortfall, Milford's future has come under the spotlight again.
Simon says that fighting a simple 'save the hospital' campaign will not be good enough this time. He wants to secure the hospital's future "once and for all".
Simon has announced a plan that would see the hospital become the "centre of excellence for elderly care" in West Surrey, with all agencies, the PCT, Social Services, the Royal Surrey and others, playing a part. Because funds across the elderly care sector would be better used, the plan would also help the budget crisis, not hinder it, claims Simon.
The idea would see new wards opened to assist the Royal Surrey and Social Services with delayed discharges - or 'bed blocking' - and provide a one-stop approach to rehabilitation, nursing and residential care. Day care services should also be expanded at Milford Hospital and the possibility of the private care sector using the "excellent and unique" location of Milford could be considered.
As part of his plan to build support for the idea Simon is sending a pack containing the plan and ways of supporting it to the 3,160 people who signed his 2001 petition. "These people were all very interested in Milford Hospital. Together we saved the hospital from closure. Now we can secure its future once and for all", said Simon.
