Simon Cordon and Waverley Leader Chris Slyfield discuss ideas for a new leisure centre with youngsters outside Godalming's current centre
A major row has broken out over whether Godalming should get a new leisure centre.
The Liberal Democrats, in charge at Waverley, have set aside £500,000 to get the project off the ground.
The money has been found from capital funds, meaning that the cost will not come from people's Council Tax.
Conservative councillors attacked the idea. Richard Gates (Con, Bramley), said the idea was a "trophy white elephant". Witley Conservative, Adam Taylor-Smith described the plan as "Slyfield's folly" - a reference to the Liberal Democrat Leader of Waverley, Councillor Chris Slyfield.
Councillor Slyfield, and the Liberal Democrats, have campaigned hard for a new leisure centre and made it a major plank of their local election manifesto last May.
It now seems that the Conservatives will fight the plans all the way.
Chris Slyfield dismissed the Tory opposition to the scheme. He said: "The Conservatives did nothing about this during their four years in power at Waverley. We fought hard for a new leisure centre and made it a major part of our election manifesto. This is why we have allocated this first batch of money. The position is clear. Tory support or not, whilst the LibDems remain in charge at Waverley Godalming will get its new sports facility".
