Simon Cordon at Haslemere Fire Station
New figures showing the true number of call-outs made by Haslemere's firefighters have been released following action from SW Surrey LibDem Parliamentary Spokesman, Simon Cordon.
It had been suggested that Haslemere crews had only attended seven night incidents in the last year. At a meeting between Simon Cordon and Chief Fire Officer, Steve Myers, Simon received agreement that these figures, used during the public consultation, represent a narrow number of calls, defined as "life-threatening".
As a result Mr Myers provided Simon with a full set of figures that show annual activity levels to be much higher, almost 40 calls at night for instance.
Simon immediately demanded that Surrey County Council's ruling Conservatives delayed taking any decision until proper consideration had to given to the full set of statistics. Surrey first refused Simon's request but in a sudden u-turn announced that the decision would now be delayed.
"As far as I am concerned the cuts to night time crews should not go ahead anyway", said Simon. "The figures I have now released from Surrey Fire Service make the case for keeping fulltime night crews even stronger", he added.
