Charles Kennedy and Simon Cordon are campaigning hard in SW Surrey
THE battle for the hearts and minds of people in the SW Surrey parliamentary constituency is set to become even more intense between the Liberal Democrats and Conservatives following an indication that the Labour Party have virtually given up any hope of campaigning for the seat.
Labour have always been third in the seat which covers Farnham, Godalming and Haslemere. The Liberal Democrats have gained ground on the Conservatives election after election. At the last General Election, in June 2001, following a dramatic recount Liberal Democrat candidate Simon Cordon came just 861 votes away from winning.
Simon has continued to campaign hard across the area earning a strong reputation for his dogged defence of local health services and campaigns from saving local bus routes to scrapping the Council Tax.
Labour received a final blow last year when they lost their last two councillors at the local elections which saw the LibDems take control of the Borough from the Conservatives. The lack of a Labour councillor anywhere in the area is believed to be a key reason for their retreat.
