Waverley's Liberal Democrats would seek to reduce the scale of the East Street redevelopment if they regain control of the Borough in May.
"The first thing we would do would be to carry out a complete review as long as there are no financial penalties hanging over from the rushed contract agreed by the Conservatives", said Councillor Chris Slyfield, Leader of Waverley's Lib Dems.
"We have a strategy for East Street and that is to reduce the scheme", said Councillor Rosemary Thomas, deputy leader of the Lib Dem Group at Waverley. "It's time the financial benefits were seen by the public. Not because that would give us more bricks to throw at the Conservatives for going for the highest bidder but because we need to assess what reductions could be made".
The Liberal Democrat Strategy for East Street:
- The Liberal Democrats have consistently argued that the needs of the community must come first within the East Street scheme - rather than profit for Waverley or the developer.
- Lib Dems opposed the rushed decision to sign a contract with Sainsbury's for their current over-bearing scheme.
- If the Lib Dems win Waverley on May 1st they have said they will look at every possible way of undoing the damage caused by the decision to sign a Lib Dems.
- The Lib Dems want to see a considerably scaled-down scheme with important community facilities guaranteed, including the CAB, the Gostrey Centre Lib Dems Brightwells.
- The Lib Dems are insisting that a detailed traffic study Lib Dems be undertaken.
- The Lib Dems oppose four-storey high buildings in East Street and want to reduce the number of offices and new shops.
