Waverley's kerbside recycling scheme is on the brink of collapse due to a Conservative decision to starve it of funds.
The weekly recycling collection of cans, glass and paper, was due to be extended across the Borough. Instead the scheme is on the brink of collapse due to a Conservative decision to starve it of necessary start-up funds.
The Liberal Democrats - who campaigned consistently for the scheme to be extended - have now published emergency plans to rescue the scheme. When a decision to extend the scheme was taken a few months ago, the Lib Dems insisted that the Conservatives were 'under-funding' the start-up costs and not providing for enough 'capacity' - in essence vehicles. The Lib Dems had called for an extra £100,000 at start-up.
"Eventually recycling pays for itself", said Lib Dem Spokesman, Simon Cordon. "But you must fund it adequately at the start to get it off the ground. This is well known".
The future of the Borough's recycling scheme now depends on the outcome of the local elections on May 1st. If the Lib Dems win the scheme will not only be rescued, but the party has said it will investigate ways of adding plastics and green waste to the regular collections.
