The Liberal Democrats are overtaking the Conservatives as the main opposition party. A series of recent polls, published in papers ranging from the Telegraph to the News of the World, put all three parties neck and neck around 31%.
According to an NOP poll for the Independent, people see the Liberal Democrats as the main party of opposition by a margin of 41% to 39%. The Telegraph commented: "The Liberal Democrats appear to have drained support in almost equal measure from the Conservative Party and Labour".
This is particularly important in SW Surrey where at the last General Election Liberal Democrat candidate, Simon Cordon, with over 21,000 votes came just 861 away from taking the seat from the Conservatives. Labour were a poor third with just over 4,000 votes.
