Liberal Democrats have joined campaigners in condemning the decision by local Conservatives to extend the amount of landfill in South West Surrey at Farnham.
Surrey County Council decided that landfill should be allowed to start again at Alton Road in Farnham despite vigorous opposition from local people and a whole set of sound reasons against the extension.
The Liberal Democrats have vigorously opposed this extension because of the serious health risks, environmental damage and pollution. The party says recycling is the answer. "Surrey County Council is not listening to local people", said LibDem Councillor Victor Scrivens, who is mobilising Town Council opposition to the pit. "The decision is deplorable and is against the whole concept of looking after the environment of Surrey".
Nationally the Liberal Democrats have published costed plans to provide doorstep recycling to every home in the Country. "This is cheaper in the long-term and it cuts out the need for more and more landfill", said local Parliamentary Spokesman Simon Cordon.
